Craig Clevenger's latest brings everything you could want to the table: suspense, msytery, a unique writing style, and an adequate story line. Unfortunately, he never quite gets off the ground; the plot and characters never seem to develop. Most of the dialogue is simple one-line pieces, and he offers little explanation of the characters and their wants, desires, and personalities, except for the protagonist, Eric, who constantly talks about a girl he loves but can't find. Everyone seems to be raving about this book. The premise is terrific -- Kipling's interactions with a neighboring Vermont farming family. However, I just couldn't develop a sense of sympathy with any of the characters. I want to like Kipling because I like his work. I want to like Joe (the boy who befriends Rudyard Kipling) because his life is hard. Nevertheless, I don't really like these characters - or care much about them.
