Chapter 1518 - 870: Traversing Among Zombies (Part 2)
This workshop is no less than two thousand square meters, and some Zombies inside, having heard the noise, slowly started shambling toward Third Uncle and the others."Old Qin, go check whether these machines and batteries are still usable." Third Uncle said, then stepped up with Ant to meet the Zombies head-on.
Their combat strength was terrifying to begin with; just now they’d only been holding back to save energy instead of wasting it on clearing Zombies.
But now that they’d found what they came for, they definitely had to deal with the Zombies.
Old Qin nodded, then walked over to inspect the machines. He took some instruments out of his backpack and powered them on for testing.
But there didn’t seem to be any response, until he opened up one of the machines and discovered that the inside was actually rusted, and the whole thing had been soaked and swollen with water.
He checked one after another, but all of them turned out to be scrapped; once batteries have been soaked in water, they’re very hard to repair.
"Captain, the stuff on the first floor here is basically unusable. Let’s go check somewhere else; there’s no way they only had one production workshop." After all, Old Qin had worked in a lathe factory after he left the army, so he did have some experience.
So they started heading out.
Leaving through the main gate of the workshop, they casually closed the big doors behind them.
Figuring that they’d already been discovered by the Zombies anyway, they no longer bothered trying to keep the noise down.
With Anti-explosion Suits and helmets on, as long as they didn’t collapse from exhaustion or get trapped in a Zombie Tide for too long, these Zombies actually weren’t much of a threat to them.
They strolled out of the factory at an unhurried pace.
The dozen or so Zombies that followed them out of the workshop were quickly taken down by Third Uncle, one slash per head.
Even the few strays they’d seen from the helicopter earlier, shambling up from below, were casually chopped down by Ant in passing.
They had smeared a layer of Zombie blood and flesh over their Anti-explosion Suits, allowing them to move freely among the Zombies.
But this really tested a person’s nerve; if someone with a weak heart suddenly screamed, they’d be dead for sure.
For Third Uncle and the others, though, it was just for convenience. After all, looking at the overall workshop, there were still quite a lot of Zombies inside, at least several hundred.
Very soon, Old Qin led Third Uncle and the others to another workshop, similar to the one they’d just seen, except this one was a whole building, not just a single story.
They went up to the second floor and found some usable batteries and equipment, as well as raw materials...
Third Uncle took a spray can out of his backpack and sprayed a mark on the door so that Old Bi and the others could come later and haul the stuff out.
Along the way, they’d smeared a layer of Zombie blood and flesh on themselves so the Zombies inside wouldn’t notice them.
After that, they opened all the doors in the workshop, letting the Zombies locked inside come out.
They needed to lure these Zombies away, otherwise it would be troublesome for Old Bi and the others when they came to clear the place later.
After spending an hour or two opening all the doors in the entire factory.
Third Uncle contacted Jackals.
"Jackals, take the helicopter up, turn on the speakers, crank the loudhailer to max volume. We’ve already opened all the doors inside the factory—use the sound to lure these Zombies away."
"Got it, Captain. Did you find what you needed?" Jackals asked as he piloted the helicopter.
"We found it. Hurry up and take off, lead the Zombie horde east. Take them at least ten kilometers out, then come back to pick us up." Third Uncle said.
"Okay."
Jackals started up the helicopter, and it lifted off from the rooftop.
Next, Jackals flipped through the music playlist. Not bothering to choose, he just randomly hit the play button.
"You are the most beautiful cloud in my sky, let me keep you with all my heart!!"
"Yo! Yo!"
.....
The speakers were at maximum volume, amplified by the loudhailer.
The sound was so loud it even startled Jackals; he felt like his eardrums were about to burst.
He hurriedly slipped on his headset with one hand, and only then did it feel a bit better.
He hadn’t worn it before takeoff because he wanted to test how loud the sound would be; he hadn’t expected it to be this ridiculously loud.
In the small plaza at the center of the factory, Third Uncle and the others looked up at the helicopter in the sky.
A single booming blast of song left them dazed; it was way too clear.
Roooar, roooar, roooar!
With that sound, more than a thousand Zombies came pouring out of the workshops one after another, surging in a black mass as they followed the helicopter, shambling out through the factory gates.
Third Uncle and the others stood motionless in the middle of the Zombie crowd.
The thick layer of Zombie blood and flesh covering them made the nearby Zombies take them for their own kind.
Only after the Zombies had moved off did Third Uncle and the others still manage to see the helicopter in the distance, and they could still hear the lingering melody drifting over.
"Feels kind of... off, somehow." Old Qin coughed twice and said to Third Uncle.
Third Uncle glanced around; there were basically no Zombies left nearby.
So he stepped back to the central fountain and plopped down on the edge.
The fountain had dried up, with two skeletons lying inside.
Third Uncle sat on the edge of the fountain, looking at the helicopter with an easygoing air.
"Let’s wait here." Third Uncle said to the other two.
.....
In the helicopter, even with noise-canceling headphones on, Jackals could still hear that piercing soprano voice.
He wanted to switch to another song, but felt that another track wouldn’t be loud enough, so he just put this one on single-track repeat.
The Zombie horde behind him grew larger and larger, their numbers swelling.
The sound was so loud that not only did it lure all the Zombies out of the workshops, it also drew in Zombies from the surrounding area. But since Jackals was in the air, no matter how many Zombies there were, they couldn’t hurt him.
Jackals spent quite a while, a full hour or so, leading these Zombies several kilometers away.
Even though the flight distance wasn’t far, it was still burning aviation kerosene.
The fuel gauge was in the red; at most he had another half hour of flight time before the jet fuel ran out.
So he had no choice but to report the situation to Third Uncle.
After learning that the Zombies had already been drawn seven or eight kilometers away, Third Uncle told Jackals to head back—seven or eight kilometers was more than enough.
Soon.
Jackals turned off the speakers and loudhailer, and it instantly went quiet. The Zombies below suddenly lost their bearings, became restless, and scattered in all directions.
Jackals immediately swung the helicopter around and flew back to the lithium battery factory to pick up Third Uncle and the others.
While Jackals had been leading the Zombies away just now, Third Uncle and the others had also set up barriers at the lithium battery factory gates to prevent outside Zombies from getting in again, making it easier for Old Bi and the others to come later and haul stuff.
Very quickly, they took the helicopter back to the Xiu Shui Transfer Station.
The distance from New City to Xiu County was very short, so they made good time.
Zhou Tian and the others at the Transfer Station saw Third Uncle and his group again and came over enthusiastically to greet them.
From Third Uncle they learned that Old Bi and his group would also be coming today. Zhou Tian and the others were a bit excited; after all, there had only been a few of them at the Transfer Station all this time, and it was usually pretty boring.
At two in the afternoon, Old Bi and his convoy arrived at the Transfer Station without a hitch.
After Old Bi entered the Transfer Station, he was clearly in high spirits.
The pressure on him had been huge—bringing hundreds of tons of oil back to Big Camphor Tree Base was like walking down the street in the old world with an open backpack full of cash.
The difference was that they had guns and cannons in their hands, enough to intimidate anyone secretly eyeing them along the way.
"We finally made it without a hitch." Old Bi found Third Uncle in the Transfer Station and said with some emotion.
Third Uncle patted him on the shoulder and said with a smile, "Old Bi, don’t stress so much. We can support you guys anytime."
Old Bi nodded, saying nothing.
After a long moment, he suddenly said, "Captain, what’s the situation with that lithium company? If we don’t go today, and set out tomorrow to collect the lithium equipment and raw materials, we might not be able to get back to Big Camphor Tree Base until the day after tomorrow."
Third Uncle shook his head and said with a smile, "No need to make it that troublesome. The Zombies inside have already been cleared out, and we’ve found what we need. Tomorrow, all you have to do is load that equipment and those raw materials onto the trucks. It’ll probably take at most one morning, then you can head back to the base in the afternoon. You’ll definitely make it in time!"
Hearing this was a pleasant surprise for Old Bi.
So he grinned and said, "You really are something, Captain!"
.......
The Transfer Station provided a place to rest, refuel, take on water, repair vehicles, and change tires.
The night passed uneventfully.
Early the next morning, they continued south, heading toward the road to the New City lithium battery factory.
