Chapter 271 To rid the disease

Chapter 271 To rid the disease

The jaguar spirit made quick work of the beast and monster rank cryptids as soon as it came out of its clay figurine. Even the strongest monster was no match for his powerful maws that were able to crack open their shells like they were crackers.

Meanwhile Uriel kept busy fighting off those cryptids who dared get close to him which sped up the process of clearing the street, not that they were any menace to him but he didn't want them to attack Emma who remained unconscious.

"Bad cat!" Uriel scolded the jaguar when he saw it munching on a monster rank flux orb. "This would be a great time to use the magazine." He let out a regretful sigh at the loss of the only artifact he could use to punish the unruly feline without hurting it.

Just when the last of the cryptids was vanquished and silence was made again in the lost city, the light of Uriel's gas lantern began dancing as though being affected by a sudden gust of wind. Something he knew impossible because the gas lanterns were designed to endure harsh climate.

"It's coming." Uriel muttered to himself, yet nothing happened. He could feel an uncanny presence in the vicinity, but he couldn't pinpoint the exact location.

Uriel turned his head several times, he looked upwards, then to the walls next to him and there was nothing strange. It wasn't until he looked at the ground that he noticed the presence of a strange symbol, it was a circle with an X that crossed its borders.

He leaned closer to inspect the odd shape, seemingly fingerpainted, that appeared out of nowhere but then he realized his hands were covered in blood and Emma was dead right besides him.

"What the!?" Uriel shouted, but he couldn't hear his own voice. He just murdered an innocent person, even if he didn't particularly liked Emma she was still innocent.

As Uriel's eyes began to light up with power a small field of blue energy formed around him allowing him to snap back to reality where the lumbering creature stood there pointing its blank face towards him.

No emotion leaked out of the void faced creature, but the same could be said about Uriel whose eyes had turned stone cold. For a glimpse of a second Uriel thought he was looking at his own reflection, but even then his will didn't waver and he rushed in swinging his blade at the Slenderman using Dash.

After the strike Uriel lost his balance on his own as the cryptid had vanished into thin air. He quickly scanned his surroundings, noticing that Emma was still alive and breathing under the guard of the loyal jaguar spirit and after making a mental note to reward the feline he resumed his search for the cryptid.

It wasn't long until he spotted the slender creature inside a ruined building behind an empty window frame, but when he reached the location and swung his blade the cryptid was nowhere to be seen again.

This repeated itself a few times until Uriel realized how pointless it was to spend so much flux energy in keeping his skill active. It wasn't a matter of speed, every time he landed a hit the creature vanished.

"Something is off..." He said trying to gather his breath. There was no point in stating the obvious but he felt better by letting out his frustration out loud nonetheless.

The Slenderman did not attack him in any way, but it also didn't leave him alone and it didn't matter how did he try to attack it, the creature was either invulnerable or capable of teleporting.

Uriel wished it was the latter because it meant that sooner or later it would make a mistake and he'll be able to land a hit, but no matter how many times he tried all he achieved was to spend even more flux energy.

Then, an idea crossed his mind and a grin appeared on his face as he broke the gas lantern, the very same lantern that acted as his lifeline so many times before.
