Chapter 172 A Test of Skill

Chapter 172 A Test of Skill

Dot's heart pounded with a mix of excitement and nervousness as she stood across from Mira on the sparring field. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows over the ground, a fitting backdrop for the spectacle that was about to unfold. Around them, the murmurs of the other children filled the air, their excitement palpable.

"Are you ready?" Mira asked, a playful grin on her face as she stretched her arms. The shadow bear, Nyx, loomed nearby, its presence adding an extra layer of intensity to the scene.

Dot nodded, tightening her grip on her bow. She could feel the eyes of the other children on her, some curious, others skeptical. But she was determined. She had seen so much in the Sanctuary that day—children sparring with weapons and magic, their skills far beyond anything she had imagined. Now, she wanted to prove herself, to show that she could be just as strong.

Mira crouched slightly, her eyes focused on Dot. "Let's see what you've got."

Dot drew an arrow from her quiver and notched it, her movements smooth despite her racing heartbeat. She took a deep breath, calming herself as she aimed at Mira. Her orange hair caught the light, a bright contrast against the dark backdrop of the shadowy field. Several boys in the crowd whispered amongst themselves, admiring the sight of the determined archer.

As Dot released the arrow, Mira moved. Shadows swirled around her, and she seemed to melt into the darkness, her form blurring as she dodged the arrow with ease. Dot quickly notched another arrow, her eyes narrowing in concentration. She fired again and again, but each time, Mira's shadowy form danced out of the way.

Mira chuckled, her voice echoing from different directions, disorienting Dot. "You'll have to do better than that!"

Dot gritted her teeth, refusing to be discouraged. She shifted her stance, her eyes scanning the area for any sign of Mira. Suddenly, she caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of her eye. Without thinking, she spun and fired an arrow, aiming at the shadow.

But it was a feint. Mira appeared behind her, her hand gently tapping Dot's shoulder. "Gotcha," she said, her tone teasing.

Dot gasped, spinning around to face her opponent, but Mira was already gone, merging once again with the shadows. The other children watched in awe, some cheering for Mira, while others rooted for Dot, impressed by her persistence.

Ahmed and the elders stared at Canna with a serious expression. The oogla stone was the reason the entire village had gathered here in this location. Despite the dangers, the lack of backup, and their deep forest location, the village's survival depended on it.

Generations ago, the first leader of their village discovered a massive Oogla Vein. The discovery led them to settle here, as Oogla stones were highly valuable. This vein of Oogla stones had sustained the village for decades, and despite two generations of mining, it showed no signs of depletion.

Even now, Ahmed confirmed, there were still abundant resources.

Thrain, the head of the dwarves, had requested these stones urgently. The mineral was essential for enhancing their training fields, significantly reducing impact damage. Thrain had stressed that high-quality training grounds were impossible without Oogla stones.

Canna, surprised, asked, "So where is that vein?"

The villagers exchanged wary glances. If Canna hadn't saved them from having their village trampled down by the ogres, they might have drawn their weapons in response to such a bold question from him.

Ahmed swallowed nervously and pointed downward. Canna's curiosity was piqued as he looked at Ahmed, unsure of what was being implied.

Ahmed finally spoke, "It's beneath this village."

Canna's eyes widened in surprise.
