Chapter 70 Attack Begins
"All the bodies have disappeared?" Lance asked, his face showing a knowing look rather than surprise.
"Yes, chief. Every single one." The goblin scout answered, nodding her head as she did.
"Very well. You did well to report back, you can go now." Lance said.
Lia and Rynne were with him at that time and also heard the new piece of information, and even they were surprised and wondered what the reason could have been.
"is it possible that they were taken to that black altar for some ritual?" Rynne asked as she wondered.
"That would make sense, but I don't think that is what is going on now." Lance said, drawing their attention.
"If it isn't for the ritual, then what else could it be?" Lia asked expectantly.
"We are dealing with a foe that can use dark magic, control mutated beasts... it's only logical that they are planning to create undead with those bodies." Lance said. This was more of a speculation, but following normal Logic according to his knowledge, Lance couldn't think of anyother reason. If he remembered correctly, there were no bodies around the black altar either when they first came across it. "They've been preparing this for a while now... and I doubt their main target is us." Lance said, reasoning more with himself than offering up suggestion.
"If their main target is not us, then what is their goal?" Rynne asked, leaning against the tree.
"Well, they might plan to just release them all around this region, that's one... but, that doesn't serve any purpose, at least, not one I can see. The next reason may be to use them as a force to attack nearby tribes and settlements, the bigger ones. Perhaps, beastkin or bigger ogre or orc tribes... Maybe, even the humans." Lance said, layering out his thoughts.
"But now, we have become the target... How many are we talking about even?" Rynne asked.
"What the hell... They sure don't move like orcs..." One goblin said, perhaps a thought going through most of their head.
"Don't underestimate them! Your enemy does not feel any pain and does not tire! Make a stupid mistake, and you're dead!" Rikka said, forcing the rest to stand readier.
"Hold the line!" Rynne shouted, her spear raised high.
The goblins braced themselves as the orcs slammed into the barricades, their brute strength threatening to tear through the defenses. Spears and arrows rained down on the orcs, but the new nature of their being pushed the goblins to their limits as they struggled to fight back effectively. The orcs didn't attack with the same diversity as their living counterparts, but their strength was no less.
Lance watched from the command post, his eyes darting between the battle lines. The orcs were overpowering the front defenses, their raw strength overwhelming the goblins' lighter frames. Even the bigger male goblins from one of the newer tribes couldn't hold a candle.
Hidden pits and spike-filled trenches suddenly gave way beneath the orcs' feet, sending them crashing into the spike embedded ground.
'Now, hit them from the sides.' Lance thought to himself, just as he had planned. They did just that, and Lance for now was happy with how things were going. He was yet to find any demon, but he remained vigilant.
Rynne led a flanking manoeuvre, her warriors striking with precision and ferocity. This time however, it wasn't going as normally would, mainly because this army did not contain any emotions or feelings. They could not be swayed.
Just while they were struggling with the Orcs, the goblins surged forward through the forest, sprinting forward without any viable plan.
Arrows flew from different directions, aimed at the incoming goblins, though, it didn't appear to be doing much, as just like the orcs, they would only continued forward without stop or even a reaction.
Perhaps, one of the most important pieces of the battle was Lia whose protection magic stop quite a few goblins on their side from dying without the knowledge of what killed them.
"We can't let up." She murmured to herself.
