Chapter 415 The Heat of A Thousand Fires
Chapter 415 The Heat of A Thousand Fires
[HAWI]
Staring at the long staircase, Hawi contemplated whether this was going to be worth it or not. She couldn't remember the last time she had faced this many challenges in one go.
Granted, she already knew that she was special, but then each chapter of her special ability was taking her further from home. Hawi had only ever wanted to clear her name and go back to Sicario.
It wasn't supposed to be this hard and complicated. No one had told her of the chaos she would have to deal with and frankly even as she stared at the one hundred and first step, she wondered if this was the best way for her.
Sure, they had come long way, but did they'd have to keep this going?
"You don't have to keep going, Mistress," Malika said, the earnesty in her voice clear, there was a sign that this was a test for Hawi or anything she was being truthful with her, but what were the chances that she was just doing her job by being the protector of the realm?
As a protector and a powerful one, Malika knew she had to be ready for anything that meant a lot to the realm. If Hawi didn't go up those stairs then she was useless to the realm.
She wouldn't be worth the gifts that would come, especially since the damned stairs were the determinant of the roads she would take.
If Hawi went down from here, Malika would have no choice but to go to Olyana and report that the woman they had trusted had managed to fail spectacularly and that they needed to start preparing for another white wolf.
That would also mean that they would have to figure out ways of eliminating Hawi. It was unexpected, but it was what they needed to do. The truth was never going to be easy to deal with, after all this was never just about the two of them.
This was about the entire realm that had suffered at the hands of the Russels. There was no changing that simple fact if they were going to have a weakling for a white wolf.
"Well, thank goodness," Ruru said in relief as she plopped on the steps.
She knew there were people who needed to live and had things to live for, people who woke up and hoped the day would be good. Hawi had seen them one too many times and that was the kind of drive that was keeping Hawi going.
Malika hoped that on that day, there wouldn't be any difference.
There was a lot that they would end to work through but none would be more pressing than the fact that life had been shitty and they had been able to saddle through, without a lot of casualties, thanks to Awuor Hawi.
"Are you guys tired?" Hawi asked as she stared into Malika's eyes. It was like she was looking into Malika's soul, but was that it or was Hawi just trying to make everything make sense for them all.
She was trying to determine whether this was something that they needed to do or if this was just a silly adventure that they were on because they couldn't figure out where the fuck the Russels were, and a part of them was hoping that the crazes were somewhere in this goddamn island?
"I know I am. But if you want us to keep going, then we can keep at it," Malika stated as she looked up the damned stairs.
She hated these stairsteps with all of her.
They were the worst part of her job, since she was asked to go up there, she would be able to reach the last step in just three days. It wasn't a lot of work for her, but then the woman she was with had to make that decision for the both of them.
It didn't matter what color the sky was if they decided on doing whatever, because that was what would make it better or make the mission a waste of time.
"Girl, we have been at this for a while now. The weather makes me feel like my brains don't deserve the slightest bit of sanity. I miss my bed, in all the honesty I can muster at the moment," Ruru let out with a whine as she looked at Malika as if to ask Malika to tell Hawi that this wasn't the kind of shit for them.
They had hopes, hoped that Hawi would have mercy on their feeble souls and make them run back. Hawi looked at her team and she knew what she needed to do.
"Get up, we're leaving," Hawi said as she looked at the stairsteps behind them.
