Of all the things that the Savasci knights dreaded, betrayal had to be high up on that damned list. It was the one thing that could tear them to pieces and they wouldn't have the breath to deal with the aftermath of it in the right way.
That was also why they had strived to live a life that didn't have them betraying each other. They had done a lot of things along the way, and committed one too many sins, but the one thing that they had never once done against each other was betrayal.
It was a cruel thing and they despised it, and yet as they stood there, listening to Malika and her command to the potatoes they couldn't help but feel betrayed.
Granted, they would have eventually had to bury Rukiya Greyson and announce to the Greyson pack that their alpha was no more, but then having it out there like this wasn't how they had planned and it hurt.
"No one is leaving with her," Mbali stepped up, standing between her sister and the protectors.
She had been with Hawi and Ruru long enough to know that things were never to be met at face value. The rational part of Mbali wanted her to let things happen like they were meant to, but rationality wasn't what they needed right now.
They had all still been in denial about Rukiya and that was why they had taken turns taking care of her body, making sure that she was comfortable even though there was a real chance that her soul had probably already crossed into the afterlife.
It was not fair, but life was never that fair to anyone anyway. This was dangerous, but this was what they wanted to figure out on their own.
"Lili—" Malika began and Mbali growled at her sister for the first time in so long. This wasn't meant to happen; this wasn't how they had thought shit would get and yet as they stood there, they knew it would probably end not the worst of battles.
"Let them," Hawi said defeatedly as she looked at the two sisters she had been there when everything had happened and when the sisters had finally started to trust and love each other as they should have.
Hawi knew Mbali never once forgave Malika for abandoning her and their parents years ago, which was also why she couldn't let this happen. She didn't want to be the reason the sisters were at odds again.
Sure, fate was playing the long game with them, but this time, Hawi wanted to win. She wanted to be certain that her friends would be happy.
She wanted to remind the world that regardless of what they did and how they did it, they would always be part of each other. It wasn't supposed to be hard for them even if the signs were staring right back at them.
"What?" Mbali asked as she looked at Hawi. She hadn't expected that Hawi herself would make those decisions and for a moment she felt like Hawi was the one betraying them.
She just didn't understand why it was always so easy for Hawi to pack up and leave. Granted they all understood her pain and wanted her to heal, but upping and leaving each time wasn't what was best for the girl.
They had been there for her and just like the other times, she was ready to leave it all behind. Then again, if the positions were switched, would they do what they wanted of Hawi this time?
Would they be strong enough to fight their demons and make the best of their loneliness? Would it be worth it anyway?
Was it ever going to be a good day for them or was this just another game they were struggling to play and one they all knew they wouldn't ever be able to win? Was this what life was meant to be like for the lot of them?
"I'm tired, Elodie. I thought I was a stone rug to keep the battle going. I thought if I tried to hide how I really felt, then we would all be fine. But I can do that no longer. It hurts to even think like this.
"It hurts to know that I am a disappointment to you too, sister, but it is the truth. I don't know how to live with all this pain. Maybe if I rest, maybe if I burn with Ruru, I will be fine. Maybe the skies will be blue again and maybe we will be happy, always and forever.
"I had family and they were taken away from me," Hawi said even though she felt like she was about to burst. She knew this wasn't the easiest of things for them all. She knew that fate was the son of a bitch that despised her happiness.
She knew that and she was slowly trying to make peace with the side of riley. Maybe if she accepted it, maybe she would be happier and she wouldn't have to question everything that she believed in, right?
It was a long gamble but it was a decision she had to make and she had decided that this would be it. So, she watched as the protectors went into the pack house and into her suite to take out her woman.
It was something that would forever haunt her, but maybe if she rested with Rukiya, she wouldn't have to feel the pain anymore, right?
"Family is more than those we share blood with. You taught us that, and suddenly you want to change? What happened, Hawi? Why was it so easy for you to always want to leave? What about us? What about the plans we had?
"What about the life we had?" Elodie asked angrily.
She couldn't believe that Hawi was making her choice. This wasn't what they had wanted for each other and the longer they strived to make ends meet, the more they were sure to lose everything they could hold onto.
"I loved... Elodie. I loved... and I lost!! And you know why I lost? Because they were around me! I was THE risk! Everyone who stays around me ends up dying. Call me selfish, but I don't want to see you dead, okay?
"I can't handle another loss because of me!" Hawi shouted at her sister, shutting up everyone around them, including the protectors who had come with Ruru.
