Chapter 983: Love Is Candy, Sweet to the Point of Sorrow (3)
Xie Xiaoran wasn’t someone who could easily comfort others. After listening to Su Weiyi, she understood how Su was feeling. Xie Xiaoran simply asked succinctly, "What do you plan to do?"
Su Weiyi looked at her, quietly dazed for a few seconds, then lowered her head again, "I don’t know."
It’s the truth. If she knew what to do, maybe she wouldn’t be so conflicted.
Xie Xiaoran turned her chair and sat next to Su Weiyi. She also remained silent for a few seconds, then said abruptly, "Want to hear my story?"
"Hmm?"
Xie Xiaoran didn’t look at Su Weiyi; instead, she gazed out the window. Her usually calm face bore a slight smile at the corner of her mouth, but it was extremely cold and deeply sarcastic.
"Remember I told you I had a boyfriend?"
Su Weiyi was slightly stunned, taking several seconds to come to her senses, recalling the day they first entered the school, it seemed they talked about this.
But later on, not only did they not see Xie Xiaoran’s boyfriend, they didn’t even see them having a phone call a few times.
During the winter and summer vacations, Xie Xiaoran mostly stayed in B City to work, not at all like someone who had a boyfriend.
"We were high school classmates. Though he couldn’t compare to you, he was also exceptional. His parents have significant influence in our hometown. I really liked him, and I knew he really liked me too. He could have come to B City with me, but he didn’t. Instead, he chose to go abroad directly. The day he left, I went to the airport to see him off, but could only hide behind a pillar, quietly watching him."
Su Weiyi frowned as she listened, "Why?"
The sarcasm at the corner of Xie Xiaoran’s mouth deepened, "Because his parents were there. We had agreed that after high school graduation, he would introduce me to his parents, introduce our relationship, but when that day finally came, nothing happened."
Su Weiyi looked at Xie Xiaoran. Her mouth still held that sarcastic curve, but beneath her calm face was an indescribable sadness and a sense of having seen it all.
"He said nothing, and that matter just faded away without any conclusion. Later, he said he was going abroad to study, claiming it was his family’s decision, though I knew it was really his."
Su Weiyi listened, slightly bewildered, her brow furrowing deeper, "Is that his way of breaking up?"
"You could say so. He liked me, but couldn’t bring himself to say it, and he knew I wouldn’t do it either. So he chose this way, letting space, time, and distance become irreconcilable contradictions between us. Actually, you know, till today, neither of us has ever said the word ’breakup,’ but we’ve completely vanished from each other’s lives."
Su Weiyi pursed her lips. She wanted to ask what this meant but seemed to understand Xie Xiaoran’s point. Maybe some breakups are dramatic and earth-shattering, but some just quietly fade away as time passes.
"Xiao Yi, to this day, I can tell you he liked me, but his family could never accept me, so he didn’t dare to bring it up. He feared he couldn’t protect me, and he was also afraid we’d eventually have to compromise with reality. Rather than facing that and both getting hurt, it was better to part ways early on for our own well-being."
Su Weiyi felt her heartstrings quiver; her fingers involuntarily tightened, "Are you willing to accept that?"
"What’s there to be unwilling about? In this world, many people are in love, but how many actually end up together and last?"
