Chapter 138 Glowing.
Chapter 138 Glowing.
Hugo practically skipped up the stairs to his dorm, humming a love song he didn't even know the words to.
The glow of his happiness was so strong that the hallways themselves seemed brighter—at least in his mind.
Even the air felt fresher. It smelled of hope and grand aspirations and a bright future. Hugo's nose twitched when the smell of burnt potatoes filtered through the door opposite his...
Maybe not that fresh...
Still, he was undeterred. Nothing could make him even as much as frown. He was still above the clouds and he intended to remain there for as long as possible.
He swung the door open with enough enthusiasm to scare a passing cockroach, and there was Collins, hunched over the desk like a monk studying sacred texts.
Hugo blinked. Once. Twice. The unbelievable sight before him remained as it was. It didn't fizzle out like a hologram like he expected it to.
What the f*ck!
"Collins," he said slowly, as if trying to process the scene before him. "Are you... actually doing homework?"
Collins didn't even look up. He just kept scribbling notes like he was solving world hunger. He even had glasses on!
He looked every inch a studious and handsome young man. "Yeah, so?"
Hugo leaned against the doorframe dramatically, clutching his chest like he'd just been hit by a revelation.
Actually, he felt like his whole worldview was turning upside down and swirling fast. Had they already reached the end of this semester?
"I just... I didn't know you remembered you were a student! Like, this whole time, I thought you were here to model for the university brochure or host those exclusive parties you never invite me to."
Collins finally looked up, his eyes narrowing at the exorbitant amount of sarcasm in Hugo's voice.
"Excuse me, I am a man of balance. Academics and fun go hand in hand."
"Balance?!" Hugo burst out laughing. "The only balance you've ever shown is balancing a bottle on your head during that pool party. And you still failed in the end!"
Collins smirked, snapping the lid on his pen and picking a sharpened pencil. "Hey, don't hate the player, Hugo. I've got layers. You wouldn't understand. You can't understand."
He paused in the middle of his room, rubbed his hands together like a cartoon villain, and whispered, "System, system, it's time to see the rewards of my hard work!"
The Ultimate Harem System beeped in his mind, its voice as smug as ever.
[Ding! System Online: Welcome back, Hugo. You've unlocked a new milestone reward for reaching... ahem, 'first base and beyond.' Would you like to claim your prizes?]
Hugo's grin stretched wide. "Oh, I don't just want to claim it. I need to claim it. Lay it on me!"
It had been so long since the system had been online and spoken to him. It felt nostalgic.
Hugo had no control over this, and it also couldn't be predicted either, he could only guess today's appearance was as a result of him completing the death mission.
The system itself had come online to distribute his rewards! It was sure to be amazing!
[Ding! Host has completed the novice welcome death mission and completely passed the tutorial mode! Issuing rewards according to performance...]
It was time to see the fruits of Hugo's labour after one month of hard, gruesome work.
